Mediterranean diet not only prevents cardiovascular disease and cancer but also can maintain memory function and reduce the risk of dementia diseases that cause dementia.
Mediterranean style diet prefer plant foods, olive oil, and omega-3 fatty acids. This diet is also low in saturated fat such as that commonly found in dairy products and red meat.
In a study led by Dr.Georgios Tsivgoulis of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the U.S. and a team from the University of Athens, Greece, summarized the benefits of the Mediterranean diet to prevent cognitive decline.
The study followed 17 thousand participants from 11 states in the United States, among others, Tennesse. The participants were an average age of 64 years.
In this study, participants who had experienced a stroke were excluded. The study was claimed to be the largest in linking diet and cognitive abilities.
Cognitive abilities of the respondents regularly examined using Six-Item Sceener. The respondents also had to fill emngukur kuasioner for their ability to remember dates and simple words after their attention diverted.
Results showed participants a Mediterranean diet 13 percent lower risk of suffering from memory deterioration.
Those who adopt this diet is also able to maintain the cognitive abilities of the participants aged 70 years who had suffered dementia (dementia).
Even so, the participants who have diabetes do not benefit from this diet.

Tall and Slim Women could Have Children Easily
Body shape may be used as a sign for the estimated number of children. The researchers from Durham University claim that tall and slim women tend to have more children. Because the woman of this stature has health care and better nutrition.
The study was conducted in two communities of women in The Gambia, Africa, but the researchers say the results can also be applied throughout the world.
Data collected by the UK Medical Research Council between 1956 and 2010. The data is actually to provide information about the population in two Gambian villages. Population data is also equipped with height and weight.
During this period, residents of both communities experienced significant demographic shifts. It happened because of high mortality rates and fertility rates plummeted.
This situation changed due to health care and better nutrition. The researchers found that as the birth rate decline, women height and weight change as well.
They said initially that more women have a shorter body and fat, but then there was a shift that brings the number of women tall and more slender. This affected their ability to be able to have more children.
The researchers also said that low levels of mortality in Western countries have hindered natural selection, so stop human evolution. Dr Ian Rickard, a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology said the decline in the death rate does not make evolution stopped, but changed.
However, a study published in the journal Current Biology has not been able to explain this trend. The researchers concluded only better health care to make tall and slender women are more likely to reproduce.

HIV drugs will Coming Soon
Scientists from Denmark optimistic they are getting close to finding drugs to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Research conducted by a team from Aarhus University Hospital has reached the human clinical trials using new strategies that have proven effective in laboratory tests.
Though a few days before the U.S. government reported that research to develop an AIDS vaccine clinical trial discontinued due to disappointing show.
The team of scientists from Denmark using therapeutic viruses rid of some sort of tendon cells are made of DNA, which with the help of the body's immune system and a little help from the vaccine, could be destroyed.
Although therapy has proven effective when tested using human skin cells in the lab, efficacy or success of the human body has not been proven.
"The challenge is to make the patient's immune system to recognize and destroy the virus. This depends on the strength and sensitivity of individual immune systems," said Dr.Ole Sogaard, senior researcher.
Human studies that will involve 15 patients with funding from the Danish Research Council of 2.1 million dollars. A similar study conducted by a team of British scientists from five universities. Both research that aims to cure people who are already infected with the virus, not prevent HIV or AIDS.
Dr.Anthony Fauci, head of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the failure of the development of AIDS vaccine research is "disappointing, but at least he is no important information is obtained.
The study involved 2,504 volunteers in 19 cities in the United States since 2009. Prior to this, many studies have been done for a new AIDS vaccine, but all have failed.

Not All Men Get Benefit from Testosterone Gel
Testosterone gel is usually prescribed for men who have low testosterone levels. But
a new study states, the use of testosterone gel on elderly men did not
show improvement in flexibility, durability, as well as other general
skills. Nonetheless, testosterone gel to keep giving small changes in muscle-fat ratio.
Testosterone in the form of a gel used to improve male sexual function that has begun to decline with age. Use of gel on the skin surface can help increase the supply of testosterone in the blood stream, after absorbing gel.
Recent studies involving men aged at least 60 who have low testosterone levels to normal. The researchers reported, it remains unclear influence long-term use of testosterone gel on elderly men.
Study chairman dr. Kerry Hildreth from the University of Colorado School of Medicine says, testosterone gel may be of benefit to some men, but it is not clear that the benefits of gel in healthy men. Either used alone or with a combination sports.
Testosterone gel, he added, is often used in men that are not appropriate to use it. And the gel was not beneficial as had been assumed.
Testosterone levels will decrease naturally to a man with age. To determine its usefulness in elderly men, the researchers used a testosterone gel approved food and drug watchdog United States (FDA), AndroGel.
The researchers conducted an experiment on 167 elderly men. Some participants were given a testosterone gel, while others were given a placebo. Participants were asked to do weight training three times a week, while others do not.
After the trial, the use of testosterone gel can reduce fat mass 900 mg and 900 mg increase muscle mass. While those who did not exercise experienced improvements in upper body strength with the use of testosterone gel for one year compared with those taking placebo.
Whereas in those who exercise, the use of testosterone gel does not provide any benefit. The researchers said regular exercise already has its own benefits for body composition improvement.
Hildreth said, the Adam should be careful in using testosterone gel again. Because its use can not provide significant benefits in health and physical abilities of men.

"Rice and side dishes alone is deemed sufficient, the full importance, but it is still lacking," he said in a talk titled "The Role of Fruits and Vegetables on Health" held by Zespri.
The UN health body (WHO) recommends 400 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. American Heart Association recommends 8 servings or 4.5 bowls of various types of fruits and vegetables per day. While the Health Act No.. 36 in 2009 recommended every day people should consume 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-3 servings of fruit.

Sleep medicine Potentially Sharpen Memory
Zolpidem (Ambien), a drug that became the mainstay of many people when experiencing insomnia, it not only helps you to sleep, but also make your memory sharper.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, Ambien may increase the ability of the brain, especially memory. This drug can move information stored brain of short-term memory into long-term memory.
Results of the study are expected to contribute to new therapies that improve patient's ability to remember dementia, Alzheimer's, and schizophrenia.
Previous research suggests that the phenomenon of "sleep spindles", ie brain activity that occurs in certain phases of sleep. Sleep spindles play a role in forming memories.
"Sleep spindles can move information from short-term memory into long-term memory," said study author Sara C. Mednick, a professor of psychology at the University of California. However, this phenomenon is drastically reduced in the elderly group, causing dementia and senile.
Recent studies on the benefits of Ambien involved 49 healthy people who had slept under the age of 40 years. They were in a group, which received no medication Ambien or sodium oxybate (Xyrem) and placebo for several days.
Ambien is known to increase the activity of the spindle, while Xyrem can be lowered. The researchers monitored the sleep of the participants, and provide a measurement in terms of sleepiness, mood, and memory tests. As a result, sleep spindles increased in participants who were given Ambien.
However, other researchers Mednick and colleagues did not suggest to take Ambien with the aim of improving memory because these drugs have side effects severe enough from the start hallucinations, behavioral problems, to severe confusion.

Do you know about cancer?
Cancer is the name given to a group of diseases that affect every part of the body, also known as tumor malignancy. These cancer cells regenerate quickly than normal cells, the growth of cells outside the normal range, can attack adjacent parts of the body and spread to other organs. This process is called metastasis. Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer deaths.
Cancer risk factors
external factors
• Physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation;
• Chemical carcinogens, such as the components of cigarette smoke, aflatoxin (food contaminant) and arsenic (drinking water contaminants);
• Biological carcinogens, such as hepatitis B virus (liver cancer),
human papilloma virus (cervical cancer).
Unhealthy lifestyle
1. Consumption of tobacco, including secondhand smoke
2. Only eat meat, eat too little fruit and vegetables
3. do not exercise
4. Excessive alcohol consumption
5. sexual error

According to statistics from the WHO regional office in Southern Asia, cancer accounted for 6.6% of the total mortality rate in Indonesia is higher than in other parts of the world. Cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in Indonesia, is also a high incidence of lung cancer due to smoking, the other is breast cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer is also the most common cancer in Indonesia, every year tens of thousands of people died because of disease. Deaths from cancer worldwide are expected to continue to increase to more than 13.1 million in 2030.

AIDSAIDS (autoimunodeficiency syndrome) are the top five leading causes of death in people aged 25-44 years. Destination IP of AIDS symptoms such as weight loss without cause, fever, swollen lymph glands, fatigue, and weight is always weak. People who have AIDS are also more easily catch the disease because their immune systems are very weak.
HyperthyroidismHyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland becomes very active. The experts from the Mayo Clinic say that hipertiorid specific symptoms are weight dropped dramatically, increased heart rate, sweating, tremor, and fatigue.
DiabetesUncontrolled diabetes can also cause weight loss continues even though we often eat a lot. This is because the body can not get enough energy from sugar because less insulin. Vitamin E Healthy Heart
If you are a smoker who has quit, preferably accompanied by supplements of vitamin E. This vitamin is known to reduce the risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
In a preliminary study presented at the Experimental Biology meeting mentioned, smokers who had stopped taking vitamin E and the risk of cardiovascular disease 19 percent lower than those who continued to smoke.
The smokers in the study were asked not to smoke for 7 days. Then a marker for inflammation and symptoms of vascular function was measured before and after the study.
After quitting smoking for 7 days, is known about the function of blood vessels increased 2.8 percent. Those who took vitamin E supplements showed an increase to 1.5 percent again.
Although this increase seems small value, the researchers suggest that previous studies indicated that a one percent increase in vascular function can be interpreted as a reduced risk of heart disease by 13 percent.
Type of vitamin E were investigated in the study is gamma-tocopherol, the kind that is quite rare. Gamma-tocopherol found in soybean and canola oils, as well as the jenis pistachio nuts and cashews.
Even so the research is still in its very early stages. So it is better to consult a doctor before taking supplements.
"Vitamin E is known as blood thinners and antioxidants. Study was its small so if you want to eat better choose gamma-tocopherol from natural sources rather than supplements," said Steven Zodky, a nutritionist from the American Board of Clinical Nutritionist.
He added that, in addition to vitamin E intake, quitting smoking itself is a very good way to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"When smoking, blood vessels will constrict. Indeed there is an amino acid called arginine that I-can reduce wrinkles. But still not as good if you stop smoking," he said.
